How to Choose a UGC Tool | 8 Points to Consider Before Implementation and a Checklist [2026 Edition]

How to Choose a UGC Tool | 8 Points to Consider Before Implementation and a Checklist [2026 Edition]

[Updated October 2026] When selecting a UGC tool, you’re less likely to make a mistake if you focus on “what kind of UGC to collect, through which channels, and where to utilize it” rather than on the sheer number of features. In this article, we’ll explain the eight key points to consider when selecting a tool to leverage reviews and social media posts (UGC) on e-commerce sites, complete with sample questions to ask vendors and a pre-implementation checklist.

This guide focuses on tools that collect, display, and utilize customer reviews and social media posts on e-commerce product pages and landing pages. It does not include services that produce UGC videos on your behalf or match you with content creators. Please note that this article was written by Subspire, Inc., the provider of the UGC platform “U-KOMI.” The main text for each point is written as general criteria applicable to any tool, while U-KOMI’s specific features are detailed in the “In the Case of U-KOMI” section at the end of each point.

1. What Is a UGC Tool? Two Types

UGC tools are tools used to collect UGC (User-Generated Content)—such as reviews, testimonials, and social media posts—and display and utilize it on a company’s website (for the basics of UGC, see “What Is UGC? A Complete Guide to User-Generated Content”).

As a starting point for selection, it’s helpful to categorize UGC tools broadly into the following two types. This is not an absolute market classification, and there are also “integrated” products that support both types.

Type

Primary UGC Handled

Main Features

Review Collection and Utilization Type

Customer Reviews (Star Ratings, Text, Photos, Videos)

Request reviews via email, LINE, QR codes, etc., after purchase, and display them on the product page

Social Media UGC Collection and Utilization Type

Posts on Instagram, X, TikTok, etc.

Collect posts using hashtags, etc., and publish them on product pages or landing pages after obtaining the poster’s permission

Whether you choose one type or use a single tool for both depends on your “objective,” which we’ll clarify in the next chapter.

2. First, decide “what you want to increase”

Narrowing down your implementation objective to a single goal before comparing tools will help you determine which of the eight points to prioritize. If you have multiple objectives, be sure to prioritize them.

Objective/Situation

Type to Consider

Key Points to Prioritize

Want to increase buyer reviews and improve the conversion rate (CVR) on product pages

Social Media UGC Collection and Utilization (with measurement capabilities)

⑤ Analytics (CTR and CVR measurement), ⑧ Billing criteria

3. 8 Points to Check Before Implementation

Each point is organized in the following order: “Why It’s Important,” “What to Check (Sample Questions for Vendors),” and “Points Easily Overlooked.” Please use the sample questions directly during sales meetings or when requesting materials.

―① Implementation Objectives and Scope

The type of tool you need depends on whether your primary focus is on reviews or social media posts. If you plan to handle both, the first decision you’ll face is whether to use a single integrated tool or two specialized tools in combination.

What to Check

  • What types of UGC can the tool handle? (Customer reviews, photo/video reviews, product Q&A, staff testimonials, social media posts)
  • Which social media platforms can be monitored? Can posts from accounts other than your own be collected?
  • Which plan includes the features you need?

Points Easily Overlooked: If you use two specialized tools, the management interfaces, contracts, and data will be separate. Make your decision based not only on the total cost but also on how many staff members will be required to manage the system.

In the case of U-KOMI: This is an integrated tool that allows you to manage customer reviews, product Q&As and FAQs, staff reviews, and photos and videos from Instagram, X, and TikTok all within a single dashboard.Since it consolidates the management dashboards, contracts, and data for reviews and social media posts into a single platform, it makes operations much easier. Additionally, its visual UGC analysis feature allows you to identify photos and videos that resonate well with customers, which you can then leverage when creating content for your e-commerce site or landing pages.

―② Review Collection Process

The number of reviews is heavily influenced by the effort required to submit them. The volume of reviews collected varies depending on whether users can submit them directly from the request email without having to log in or navigate to another page, and whether there are request channels other than email.

Points to Check

  • Can users submit reviews directly from the request email without having to navigate to another page? Is a login required?
  • Are there request channels other than email, such as LINE or QR codes?
  • Can the frequency and timing of reminders be adjusted?
  • Can coupons or points be automatically awarded?

Points to Watch Out For: Depending on how incentives are structured, this could raise issues regarding stealth marketing regulations (see ⑦). Also, check if there are plan-specific limits on the number of request emails you can send. For practical guidance on collecting reviews, please refer to “How to Collect Reviews on E-Commerce Sites: 3 Reasons Reviews Aren’t Coming In and How to Fix Them.”

In the case of U-KOMI: In addition to a review form that allows users to post directly from the email, the service supports requests via LINE, QR codes, and request URLs, as well as reminders and the automatic issuance of coupons and points. Furthermore, the “Combined Request” feature allows you to collect both product reviews and site reviews (shop reviews) with a single request. Requests via LINE are available on the Standard Plan and above.

―③ Display and Credibility

Reviews only encourage purchases when customers perceive them as “trustworthy.” Let’s examine how reviews are displayed and the mechanisms that demonstrate their credibility.

Points to Check

  • Can you indicate that a review is from a verified purchaser?
  • How are negative reviews handled? (Publication criteria, whether replies are allowed)
  • Can the design of widgets and galleries be customized to match your company’s website?

Points to Watch Out For: If there is a “verification badge,” be sure to confirm who is performing the verification and based on what criteria (is it verified by the tool provider or an independent third-party organization?). Selectively displaying only high-rated reviews may undermine readers’ trust.

In the case of U-KOMI: You can display a “Verified Purchase” badge and a “Trust Badge” indicating that the review has been verified by U-KOMI.The Trust Badge is awarded by U-KOMI based on operational data such as the percentage of buyer reviews and the review publication rate, and the certification criteria are publicly available (Trust Badge Certification Criteria).

―④ SEO and AI Search Optimization

Reviews also serve as clues that help customers find products through search results and AI search. This topic can be organized into the following four points.

  • Whether the review text is crawled and indexed: If reviews are rendered using JavaScript only, how search engines and AI handle them varies by service.
  • Structured Data and Rich Results Eligibility: Structured data for products and reviews is required to display star ratings in search results. Google recommends JSON-LD but also supports Microdata and RDFa. Display is not guaranteed even with correct implementation.
  • Display in Google’s AI search features (AI Overview and AI Mode): Google states that no special markup or optimization is required; the fundamental requirement is that the content is crawlable, indexable, and useful—just like in regular search.
  • Indexing by Non-Google AI Services: Since some crawlers do not execute JavaScript, there are implementation benefits to including key body text and structured data in the initial HTML. However, this does not guarantee that your content will be cited in AI search results.

Things to Check

  • Is the review body text included in the initial HTML? Or is it rendered solely via JavaScript?
  • Is structured data (AggregateRating and Review) outputted? How is it outputted by your company’s shopping cart?

Points Easily Overlooked: The method of outputting structured data depends not only on the tool but also on the shopping cart’s specifications. Even with the same tool, conditions may vary depending on the shopping cart.

In the case of U-KOMI: It supports the output of structured data.On makeshop, the automated structured data (JSON-LD) output feature released on July 15, 2026, automatically outputs U-KOMI review information into the HTML of eligible product detail pages on the server side (existing stores must enable this setting; see makeshop’s release notes).

―⑤ Analytics and AI Features

Collecting reviews isn’t the end goal; their value increases when you use them to improve products and drive sales. Check what can be analyzed and to what extent AI can reduce operational workload.

Points to Check

  • Can you view metrics such as the number of request emails sent, open rates, and posting rates?
  • Does the service offer AI-powered review summarization, automated reply generation, and sentiment analysis? Which plans include these features?
  • Can analysis results be exported as CSV files or similar formats for use in product development or internal sharing?

Points Often Overlooked: The scope of AI functionality often varies by plan. Additionally, without an internal workflow to feed reviews into product development, you won’t be able to fully leverage the analytics features.

In the case of U-KOMI: The platform supports analysis of review collection and customer satisfaction, including metrics such as the number of request emails sent, open rates, posting rates (review acquisition rates), and NPS.You can also use U-KOMI AI for review summarization, automated reply generation, sentiment analysis, and multilingual translation (Standard Plan and above). Furthermore, it supports MCP (Model Context Protocol), allowing you to search and analyze review data stored in U-KOMI interactively via AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT.

―⑥ Supported Shopping Carts and External Integrations

The method of integration with your company’s shopping cart system determines the effort required for implementation and the degree of operational automation. In the medium to long term, the ability to connect UGC with other tools will also impact the scope of its utilization.

Points to Check

  • Is your company’s shopping cart supported? What is the integration method: app, API, or tag installation?
  • Is order data imported automatically? Does it sync with shipping status?
  • If you migrate your shopping cart in the future, can you transfer your review data?
  • Can it integrate with other tools, such as email marketing, CRM, AI customer service, and regulatory compliance checks?

Points to Watch Out For: Even if a shopping cart is listed as supported, the available features and output formats may vary depending on the specific cart. Be sure to check the specific requirements for your company’s shopping cart individually.

In the case of U-KOMI: It supports 20 shopping cart platforms, including Shopify, makeshop, futureshop, EC-CUBE, Color Me Shop, and ecforce (see the list of integrated services). The collected reviews and purchase data can be utilized in conjunction with other tools provided by Subspire, such as the email marketing tool “Bazo Mail,” the fan community tool “Bazora,” the e-commerce-specific AI customer service platform “PIKARU,” and the e-commerce CRM “Action Link.”

―⑦ Publication Permissions and Legal Compliance

Since you’ll be publishing UGC on your own website, managing permissions and ensuring legal compliance are essential. Be sure to distinguish between what the tool’s features can support and what must be determined by your operational policies.

Points to Check

  • How can you obtain permission to publish social media posts and maintain records of that permission?
  • Can you manage the scope of permission (e.g., limited to the website or including use in advertisements)?
  • How can you respond if a contributor requests the removal of their post?
  • Is there a feature to check for expressions that may violate the Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Act or other relevant laws?

Points That Are Easy to Overlook: Integration with “banned word” filters and legal compliance check tools is intended to support operations; simply implementing these features does not guarantee legal compliance.

Regarding stealth marketing regulations (Act Against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations), the Consumer Affairs Agency’s Q&A states that encouraging review submissions in exchange for coupons does not typically constitute a “business operator’s representation.” However, requiring a 5-star rating or having sales promotion staff post reviews may be considered a business operator’s representation.Do not make a blanket judgment based solely on the presence or absence of incentives; instead, verify the conditions attached and the method of presentation.

In the case of U-KOMI: From the admin panel, you can easily send a request for permission to post to the poster on Instagram (Pro Plan and above). In addition to the prohibited word feature for compliance with the Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Act, integration with YOKIYAKI allows for the automatic detection of expressions in reviews that pose risks under the Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Act and the Act Against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations.

―⑧ Fees, Contract Terms, and Support

If you compare only the monthly fees, unexpected costs may arise after implementation. Be sure to compare the total cost under the same conditions.

Things to Check

  • Are there any upfront costs?
  • What is the billing basis? (Fixed monthly fee, number of sessions, number of impressions, number of orders, etc.)
  • Are there any additional fees? (e.g., data overage, paid support, etc.)
  • What is the minimum contract term, and are prices listed including or excluding tax? What currency is used (yen or dollars)?
  • Which plans offer a free trial?
  • What are the Japanese support contact details and hours of operation? Can I export my data when I cancel my subscription?

Points to watch out for: Free plans and limited-time free trials are different. Also, the scope of features you can test before signing up varies depending on whether the trial is limited to the starter plan or is available for higher-tier plans as well. For tools developed overseas, be sure to check the language of the admin interface.

In the case of U-KOMI: On makeshop, you can start with the free plan or the Starter Plan at 5,500 yen per month (tax included). On Color Me Shop, Rakuru Cart, and B-Cart, you can choose the Starter Plan at 5,500 yen per month (tax included), and on Shopify, you can choose the Starter Plan at $30 per month. For the common plans, the Standard plan costs 36,300 yen per month (tax included), the Pro plan costs 60,500 yen per month (tax included), and the Enterprise plan is available by individual quote (10% off for annual payments). You can take advantage of a one-month free trial for the Standard and Pro plans (30 days for the Color Me Shop app; Enterprise plans require consultation). Please check the pricing plans for details.

4. Case Studies: Examples Where Key Strategies Led to Results

Here, we present U-KOMI implementation case studies where “② Collection Channels” and “⑤ Analysis and Utilization”—two of the eight key points—led to tangible results. These are reports from the companies that implemented the solution; results may vary depending on the product, operational structure, and timing. These examples do not demonstrate the effectiveness of the tool alone.

— Kinaru Co., Ltd. (Cosmetics): An Example of Revising “② Collection Channels”

Challenge: Even when requesting reviews with a 500-yen coupon, only a few reviews were collected each month.
Action: Switched to a process allowing users to post directly from an email.
Result: The company began collecting approximately 300 reviews per month without any incentives (Case Study, published October 2024).
Points to check during selection: The number of steps required to post (whether login is required, number of page transitions).

—MOON-X Japan Co., Ltd., Vieon Company (Underwear): ⑤ Example of Expanding to Include Analysis and Utilization

Challenge: There was a lack of customer feedback that could serve as a deciding factor for purchase, and ad CTR and CVR had plateaued. Since it was difficult to gauge how absorbent underwear felt to wear, the psychological barrier to purchase was high.
Initiatives: Automated review collection using U-KOMI and curated which reviews to display using the “Pickup” feature. Streamlined reply workflows with AI-powered responses and integrated the system with CRM initiatives to collect reviews.
Results: Starting from a state of virtually no reviews prior to implementation, the company recently acquired 313 reviews per month. The data is also being used for product improvements, such as expanding the XL size lineup and developing bras that pair well with the panties (Case Study, published September 2025).
Key considerations during selection: Who will handle the time and effort required for review curation and replies? Does the company have an internal workflow for incorporating reviews into product development?

5. Examples of Decisions Based on Specific Conditions

Please determine which points to prioritize based on cases that most closely resemble your company’s situation. All of these are hypothetical scenarios.

Your Company’s Situation (Hypothetical)

Approach

Priority Points

500 monthly orders, few social media posts, one person in charge of operations

First, implement one review-collection system. Consider a social media system once the number of posts increases

② In-email posts and reminders; ⑤ Availability of AI replies

Apparel industry, with several dozen Instagram posts per month and 2–3 staff members managing the account

Consider either the social media UGC model or the integrated model

⑦ Workflow for publication permissions and scope of use; ③ Design flexibility for the gallery

Less than 100 monthly orders on Shopify; looking to keep costs down

Start with tools that offer free or starter plans, and reassess when LINE requests or Japanese support become necessary

⑧ Limitations of the free plan; ⑥ Whether reviews can be imported via CSV (check this in advance in preparation for a potential switch)

6. Pre-Implementation Checklist

Once you’ve narrowed down your options to 2–3 candidates, check the following items for each tool. The numbers correspond to the 8 points in Chapter 3.

  • □ ① Types of UGC you want to handle (reviews, Q&A, social media posts) and the social media platforms from which you can collect data
  • □ ① Which plans include the features you need
  • □ ② Can users post directly from a request email without navigating to another page? Is login required?
  • □ ② Request channels other than email (LINE, QR codes) and the scope of reminder settings
  • □ ③ Display of “Purchase Confirmed” status, policy on publishing negative reviews, and scope of design customization
  • □ ③ If there are verification badges, who performs the verification and based on what criteria
  • □ ④ Whether review text is included in the raw HTML, the structured data output format, and requirements for use with our own shopping cart
  • □ ⑤ Metrics available for analysis and which plans include AI features (summarization, replies, sentiment analysis)
  • □ ⑥ Support for and integration with our in-house shopping cart, and automatic import of order data
  • □ ⑥ Migration of existing reviews (CSV import) and data export upon cancellation
  • □ ⑦ Scope of permission for social media posts, logging, and procedures for deletion
  • □ ⑦ Internal operational rules regarding the Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Act and regulations on stealth marketing
  • □ ⑧ Total cost (including setup fees, billing criteria, and additional fees), tax classification, currency, and minimum contract term
  • □ ⑧ Plans eligible for the free trial and trial period
  • □ ⑧ Japanese support contact information and hours of operation

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I operate solely on the free plan or a free trial?
A. While it’s possible to start on a small scale, free plans generally have feature limitations. For example, there may be restrictions such as limited channels for requesting reviews, no output of structured data, or the requirement for paid support for corporate use. Also, please note that the free plan and the limited-time free trial are different. Be sure to check which plan’s features you can test during the trial.U-KOMI offers a free plan for MakeShop, and you can start with a Starter Plan for 5,500 yen (tax included) per month on MakeShop, Color Me Shop, Rakuru Cart, and B-Cart, or for $30 per month on Shopify. The Standard and Pro plans include a one-month free trial (30 days for the Color Me Shop app).

Q. Do brands with very few social media posts still need a UGC tool?
A. In that case, it’s practical to start with the review-collection type. Even with few social media posts, you still have customers, so setting up a clear process for requesting reviews will make it easier to collect them. You can consider adding the social media type once your posts increase.

Q. Can I migrate reviews collected using other tools?
A. Many tools support CSV imports. However, the specific fields that can be migrated—such as photos, videos, posting dates, and product associations—vary by tool.Social media posts (visual UGC) are often excluded from migration. U-KOMI supports the migration of not only reviews accumulated in other tools but also product data and visual UGC such as photos and videos. Please consult with us in advance regarding which items can be migrated. If you consult with us during the free trial period, you can verify the display and operation with your existing reviews already included.

Q. How can I confirm whether U-KOMI is compatible with my company’s shopping cart?
A. Check the integration method (app/API/tag) in each tool’s list of supported shopping carts. If this information is not listed, please contact the provider. U-KOMI’s list of supported shopping carts is available in the list of integrated services.

Q. If I implement the tool, will star ratings appear in search results?
A. Outputting structured data is one of the prerequisites, but whether they are displayed is at Google’s discretion and is not guaranteed. It also depends on the implementation on the product page (the shopping cart’s specifications).

Summary

When selecting a UGC tool, it’s more important to work backward from “what kind of UGC your company wants to collect, through which channels, and where to utilize it” rather than focusing on the number of features. First, narrow down your objective to a single goal, decide which of the eight points are most important to you, and then use the checklist to compare candidates.

  • If you want to increase reviews: ② Collection Channels and ⑤ Ease of Management
  • If you want to leverage social media UGC: ① Supported social media platforms and ⑦ Permission workflow
  • Pricing: ⑧ Total Cost, Including Initial and Additional Fees

U-KOMI’s features, implementation process, case studies, and pricing plans are summarized in our service materials. We welcome inquiries regarding implementation through our contact form. Please see our list of case studies for examples of UGC utilization.
